At one point along an open highway,I came to a crossroads with a traffic light.I was alone on the road by now,but when I drove up to the light,it turned red,and I braked to a halt.I look left,right,and behind me.Nothing,① a car,no suggestion of headlights,but there I sat,waiting the light to change,the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wondering why I refused to run the light.I was not afraid of being caught by the police,because there was obviously no cop anywhere around and ② certainly would have been no danger in going through it.Much later that night,the ③ question of why I’d stopped for that light came back to me.I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract (合同) we all have with each other.It’s not only the law,but it’s an agreement we have,and we trust each other to honor ④ ；we don’t go through red lights.Like most of us,I’m more ready to be stopped from doing something bad by the social agreement that disapproves of it ⑤ by any law against it.

我开始想为何我不闯红灯呢.我不用担心被警察抓到,因为很显然周边一个警察也没有,闯过去也不可能会有危险.那天晚上过了一会儿,绿灯把我从这个问题中拉回了现实.我想我停车是因为那是我们互相遵守的一个约定,不仅仅是法律的约束,而是一个我们彼此信任尊重的约定：我们不闯红灯.和大部分人一样,我们更多是的通过约定成俗来避免发生一些不好的事情,而不是通过法律强行禁止做什么.
