it depends on what kind of mutation it is.For example,mutation can be point mutation,insertion,or deletion.
Generally speaking,for point mutation,silence mutation causes no change in protein product because the altered DNA encodes same amino acid,mis-sense mutation codes different amino acid in the protein product,and non-sense mutation introduces pre-mature stop coden and therefore usually leads to truncation of final protein product.
Insertion and deletion can cause frame-shifting,which may significantly alter the final protein product.
