Many years ago, our great leader Chairman Mao spoke the famous words, “Women hold up half of the sky” when New China was just founded.
We believe what he said is true. In old China, women used to suffer a lot and were in a very bad political and economical position. At that time, women belonged to the lowest class. Most of them were illiterate. They stayed at home and served their husbands. Sometimes, they were beaten up by the domestic violence. And sometimes, they were even sold like animals.
But nowadays, women’s social status has been greatly enhanced. Women play a very important role in government, in business and generally in social and cultural life. Take New Zealand as an example, two of the country’s last three prime ministers were women. As the public have realized that education and knowledge can change women’s fates, today, half of all college students are women. And half of the labor force is made up of women. It is no exaggeration to say that without women, our society couldn’t have developed so fast.
In spite of all those progresses, women’s rights in China still lag far behind in many ways. A growing gender gap reveals that in some rural areas, people still prefer to have a son rather than a girl. Rural women often lose their land when they marry and when they have to get divorced, they cannot get compensated.
Today, we are proud of women who hold up half of the sky and at the same time, we hope their rights are better protected. Then the days will come sooner when every one of us, no matter male or female, can really enjoy an equal and just life. (290 words)
