Purification of low grade molybdenite by acid leaching processes
High purity(>98%) molybdenum disulfide from molybdenite is an excellent solid lubricant,which can be used in automobile ,aerospace and military field.Molybdenite is the most widely used concentrate in the production of MoS2.Molybdenite usually contains some sulfide minerals such as covellite (CuS),pyrite (FeS2) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2),and some other impurities like quartz (SiO2).The purity of molybdenum disulfide includes a series of refining step in order to produce high grade molybdenite concentrate.The removal of copper,silica and iron impurities from low grade molybdenite concentrate is very important.Ferric chloride solution containing ferrous chloride and hydrochloric acid is a strong kind of oxidizing lixiviant which is capable of leaching copper minerals such as covellite,chalcopyrite,chalcocite,ect.Hydrofluoric acid is best know to the public for its ability to dissolve silica.Sulfur is soluble in carbon disulfide .In this work,the purification of low grade molybdenite was taken in nacid solution.The ferric chloride was used as an oxidant,and FeCl2 was added in order to improve the boiling point of the leaching solution and the activity of H+ improves with increasing metal chloride concentration in the solution.The dissolution of silica by hydrofluoric acid and the removal of elementary sulfur with carbon disulfide were investigated.The effect of the leaching temperature,particle size,S:L ratio,stirring speed,pH,leaching time and the concentration of FeCl2 have been examined and concentration of copper in leaching solution was tested by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS).We found that ,at the temperature of 110℃,with the S:L=1:2.8 and leaching time 4h,almost 100% of copper was removed from molybdenite concentrate .Then ,by leaching the silica and elemental sulfur from residue of copper removal ,we found that almost 100% of both elements were removed by chemical analysis.In this manner,low grade molybdenite can be purified to a content of more than 98%.
