I recommend that prisoners should be allowed to take courses because it can prepare them life after prison, give prisoners some ways to pass the time, and reduce crime in prison and after jail.
First, when many prisoners get out of jail, they lost their confidence and don’t want to go outside talk with people or find a job. On the other hand, taking courses in the jail can prepare prisoners life after jail, make their future life easier. According to a true story form Chinese website “a Chinese boy’s family extremely poverty, and can’t offer his university tuition fees. He was pressured by his uncle to rob people. He regretted to do that. Because the Chinese prison has college course, he decided to take this course in the jail. Also, he wants to apply post-graduate course after prison” (College courses in Chinese prison) The boy doesn’t want to give up his life, he still wants to catch his dream. This is a very good example to show prisoners won’t be forgotten by the society, they can build their life again by taking course in jail.
Second, what are prisoners doing in jail? Most prisoners in jail eat food, watch TV, sleep, and do exercise everyday. Some of them fright with other people, smoke drugs or do criminal things. This is jail’s life. When jails start courses for prisoners to take, the situation will be totally different. For example, England prison start a new course called “pole-vaulting” for prisoners who are interested in sports. “30 prisoners are taking this course now, some of those prisoners had drug addictive. After training, many of them love this sport and quit smoking drugs.”(England prison course) This course is really helping prisoners. How wonderful is it! Taking course in jail is a good way to give prisoners some way to pass the time and help them to quit terrible hobbits.
Third, the most important result is education courses in jail will reduce crime. Based on information from the University of North Carolina Pembroke “The Changing Minds study found that only 7.7% of the inmates who took college courses at Bedford Hills returned to prison after release, while 29.9% of the inmates who did not participate in the college program were reincarcerated.” (Mentor K)
Those who disagree with this proposal might say that set up courses in jail is unnecessary because most of prisoners are evil, they don’t care about education, even they take course in jail, they still will do crime after jail. This is partially true; however, most people want to be a good person even they were prisoners, they still desire to have a good life. If your neighbor was a prisoner, you want he to find a job or staring your house everyday? Obviously, it is important that prisoners should be allowed to take courses.
