因为'a large quality’是概括clothing&jewely量的词,所以quality在某种程度上就代表了c&j.并且quality在原文中为单数,所以这个从句中的谓语（be）应该和主语（a quality）保持主谓一致,所以就是was,不是were.
a large quantity of clothing and of valuable jewely中第二个of也可以省略再看.
其实你那样说也没错,就是‘一堆衣服和一堆首饰’后面动词不能单三.但是,SAT语法只要说的通就不能钻牛角尖,有的问题一钻起来就解释不清楚了.
