Last year,Joseph Medina,a 15-year-old student at West School in California,US,spent most of his time improving his poor math scores,but had little success.Recently,he joined the Interactive (互动的) Math Program (IMP) class.
IMP helps students to improve their scores by using their own learning styles.According to Debbie Wittkowske,the teacher who designed the program,students get visual aids (直观教具)  and hands-on learning in the IMP class instead of just listening to teachers and doing math exercises."Students with different intelligences(智力) learning differently from each other,"she said."So I help the students make their own learning plans according to their learning styles."
In the IMP class,video games,candy,musical instruments,cash…almost anything can be a useful tool for learning.Students also design the teaching materials for their own math lessons,and then teach them to fifth-graders at Jacobson Elementary School.
When Medina said he's a visual learner,Wittkowske gave him a hand.She wrote the math problems on the blackboard and write the answers in different colors.In this way,Medina has found math comes earlier."I'm happy about it because I get to work out many questions I couldn't do last year,"he said.
Another student,Lorena Garcia,15,almost completely gave up math last year.After she took part in the IMP class,her math score rose quickly.One of the ways she enjoys is learning by teaching primary school kids.
"I have to do a lot of work before teaching them,but it also helps me to understand math clearly,"Garcia said."I realize interacting(互动) with others is a successful way for me to make a math problem easier."
