At some unspecified time in the future, after “the bomb,” the sun appears only rarely in places; a permanent cloud belt keeps the sky gray and the land barren. Newlyweds, Lily and Tom plan to find a bit of sun while they are on their honeymoon in the south of England. After their scooter breaks down in a small town, they meet Mr. Noakes, an unscrupulous businessman who claims that if he could find a sunlit place, he would develop it and make his fortune. While returning a lost handbag, Lily and Tom find a miraculous sunlit place at the end of a dark wooed path; it is the Hatching’s cottage, where they stay for a few blissful days with a kind old woman and her blind son, working in an amazingly green garden and enjoying the rare blue sky and the sight of stars. When they return to the town, Mr. Noakes is curious about their suntans. To protect the peaceful golden place they have found, Lily and Tom say they were elsewhere and head north, pretending to return to where they had found sunlight.
