　　W：Well exciting but sometimes I find them very difficult．Most of the other students can understand the lectures without difficulty but I have to listen carefully and take lots of notes．

　　W：No I didn’t think we were allowed to．

　　M：Oh it’s no problem; you just have to ask the lecturer’s permission．

　　W：Oh that’s a good idea．And I haven’t gotten used to the teaching methods．We are often asked to have discussions．You know we seldom did this in china．

　　M：Well discussions are really difficult at the beginning but they are really a good way of learning．The other students have different opinions and you can learn much from them．So listen carefully during a discussion．If there’s something you don’t understand you can ask questions．

　　M：Anyway don’t always worry about your studies．You need to relax．You can travel to some places in Britain．

　　W：That sounds like a good idea．I’m so glad to have a friend like you in Britain．Thank you every much．

　　W：It’s difficult to find a suitable job this year．I’m under a lot of pressure．

　　M：Now college graduates are being encouraged to start their own business．It sounds really good for us．We can get some valuable social experience which will be helpful to our future jobs．We may also know about ourselves and society better．

　　W：Yes but it is not as easy as you imagine．There are a lot of problems．The main difficulty is money．And our education doesn’t provide enough knowledge on how to do it．

　　M：Maybe you are right．But our government allows college graduates to borrow money from banks and maybe some can get money from their parents．

　　W：But you have to pay back the money sooner or later．So some come college graduates prefer to live a peaceful rather than start their own business though job-hunting is very competitive．

　　M：Oh they don’t have dreams．But I have made up my mind．How about you?

　　W：Well it always takes time to consider before making a decision．

　　Mrs．Cox who is black teaches English in a large high school．Ever since she was a young girl Mrs．Cox had wanted to become a teacher．She has taught eight years now and hasn’t changed her mind．

　　After she graduated from high school Mrs．Cox went on to college．Four years later she received her academic degree and her teaching certificate．Then she was qualified to teach in the secondary schools of her state．

　　The school day at Mrs．Cox’s high school like that in many high schools in the United States is divided into six periods of one hour each．Mrs．Cox must teach five of these six periods．During her “free” period which for her is from 2 to 3 pm she must meet with parents order supplies make out examinations check homework and take care of many other things．In short her “free” period is not really free at all

During each school day an English teacher usually divides her time among three subjects：language composition and literature Mrs．Cox’s favorite subject is literature and the most exciting classes she has had lately are those devoted to the literature of black Americans．

　　M：Your study room has been one of the most popular meeting places for university students．How did this all start?

　　W：It all started a year ago when I was preparing for my final examinations．I was looking for a place to study and write my papers．I couldn’t stand the dark unfriendly feeling of the library．I prefer a comfortable and sunny study room so I rented the top floor of an old house near the university and spent my afternoons reading books and working on my papers．Then word spread and my friends started turning up．It was a great place to relax talk and compare ideas．They even started leaving their book behind and leaving some money for the things they used like coffee and pens．

　　M：Is that what made you think of turning it into a book café?

　　W：Maybe yeah．I also don’t want a stressful nine-to-five job．I’m trying to want a lifestyle that suits me．And I think there’s a need for relaxing places like this for people－especially students－to eat talk and have fun without spending too much money．If the feeling of the place is right people will come to the café．Anyway it’s more than just a business decision．It’s also a decision about the lifestyle．I want to have and about trying to create something new and different．

　　M：Susan can you help me make a decision?

　　W：what kind of decision is that?

　　M：You see I’m going to take a two-week holiday next January should I go to Spain or Switzerland?

　　W：Hmm That is a difficult decision．Both are great places．So let’s see what you want to do then．Do you like snow?

　　M：Yes very much and that’s why I’m thinking of going to such a place as Switzerland．

　　W：Right then do you want to get away from the cold weather here?

　　M：That’s also my wish so I’m thinking of going to Southern Spain．I sound every strange don’t I?I like to play in the snow but then I don’t really want to be in the cold weather．

　　W：That’s why you find it difficult to decide as you have enough reason to go to either place．Well let’s come to this basic question then．Why will you take a holiday? To kill time to have some enjoyment or what?

　　W：Well I think I need a rest after several months of hard work．
