Once a week a nurse visits Tom’s school and teaches the students how to help people who suddenly become ill or who have had an accident.Last week,the nurse talked to the students about stopping bleeding.This is part of what he said.

“If the injury is large and the amount of blood coming from it is also large,then it is necessary to stop the blood flowing through the blood vessel.We do this by putting pressure on the vessel above the injury.We can either press on it with our fingers or,preferably,put on a tourniquet,which is a piece of cloth tied tightly around the arm,leg or finger.”
