Born in a poor family Qi Baishi made his living by selling pictures. At 14 he became a carpenter and learned to paint by himself. After he was 40 he travelled by himself visiting famous mountains lakes and rivers throughout the country. After 1917 he settled in Beijing. He was good at painting flowers birds insects and fish etc. In addition Qi Baishi was good at seal carving.

In 1953 he was honoured as “People’s Artist” by the government and in 1955 he was awarded the World Peace Prize by the World Peace Council. The great contemporary painter died in 1957.
