　　W：Hello．I read about your club in the paper today．And I thought I'd phone to find out a bit more．

　　M：Yes certainly．Well we're a sort of social club for people from different countries．It's quite a new club．We have about 50 members at the moment．But we are growing all the time．

　　W：That sounds interesting．I'm British actually．And I came to Washington about three months ago．I'm looking for ways to meet people．Ah what kind of events do you organize?

　　M：Well we have social get-togethers and sports events and we also have language evenings．

　　W：Could you tell me something about the language evening?

　　M：Yes．Every day except Wednesday we have a language evening．People can come and practise their language you know over a drink or something．We have different languages on different evenings．Monday Spanish; Tuesday Italian; Thursday German and Friday French．On Wednesday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come．

　　In different parts of Britain people call their meals by different names．It's very complicated．For most people the main meal of the day is called dinner．But some families eat this at mid-day others eat it in the evening．People who have dinner in the evening have a smaller meal called lunch at mid-day and people who have dinner at mid-day usually have another meal which they call tea between five and six in the afternoon or they have supper a little later．

　　For most people breakfast is a bowl of cereal followed by toast and jam with a cup of coffee or tea．Lunch is usually a very quick meal; most people have a sandwich or a light snack．Dinner may have two or three courses．First a starter for example soup then a main course with meat or fish and finally a dessert．For the main course they usually have beef chicken or fish with vegetables like cabbage or carrots．Potatoes and onions are very common too．

　　It's probably true that British food does not have a very good reputation among people from other countries．In general though it has improved considerably in recent years．

　　Good morning and welcome to your new jobs at the City Hotel．Today is your first day to work here．Before you go off to your departments I'd like to tell you a few things．First of all some of you may have already been there but for those of you who haven't the staff room is in room F249 that's on the third floor．

　　Next…we have to take your photos…and we're going to do that here…so that on Wednesday you can all be given ID cards．We'll do that in a minute but before we start that can I just tell you that from noon today your uniforms will be ready for you to pick up from the laundry．

　　Finally at half past three this afternoon we're testing the fire alarm．So please tell any customers not to worry it's just routine．Right well that's all．Thank you．
