世界最大的浮动冰原.位于罗斯海上端,南极大陆一巨大的凹入处.据估计它的面积与法国面积差不多.探险队长J.C.罗斯首先发现陆缘冰前缘是雄伟壮观的白色障壁(1841),高60米.这一陆缘冰一直是进入南极腹地探险的重要通道,经过此地的探险包括R.阿蒙森和R.F.斯科特在1911～1912年间进行的前往南极的探险以及R.E.伯德的探险(1928～1941).这里也是几个永久研究站的所在地.

The Ross Ice Shelf is the largest ice shelf of Antarctica (an area of half a million square kilometres,and about 800 km across:about the size of France).Most of it is located within the Ross Dependency claimed by New Zealand.Ice shelves are permanent floating ice sheets that are attached to the land and are constantly fed by glaciers.The ice shelf was named after Captain James Clark Ross who discovered it on January 28,1841.Ross mapped the ice front eastward to 160ºW.
