Below is what came to my mind on the spur of the moment and is NOT AT ALL an answer to your question, but I'm sure it is not gibberish.
I would say your question is highly evocative of what has been going on for so many years in the classrooms in China.I think at least we should observe the basics of the right words at the right moment and of the right style on the right occasion. We would turn ourselves into a laughing stock if we use ink-horn terms or language of formal style on informal and familiar occasions or vice versa. The students, who are going to use English in their study, work and living should and could be alerted to this fact.
Chinese teachers of English, whether they work in universities or middle schools, used to ignore and are still ignoring linguistic register and style, which is massively regretful.I believe they need to develop a strong sense in this regard. They should re-examine their habit of ensuring grammatical correctness on the part of their students without marginal attention to register and style.Their failure to do so largely accounts for the fact that their students oftentimes can come up with beautiful sentences only in terms of grammar. This finds full expression in their practice of having their students rephrase sentences given.A good case in point would be that a teacher asked their students to recast this sentence:What advantages have trees got?The teacher expected their students to rewrite it as:How advantageous are trees? My question is:How often would native speakers say it like that? The point I'm making is that sentence rephrasing as a type of exercise is characteristic of complete and total and utter and unmitigated and arrant and ultimate disregard for register or style.Very often when you listen to Chinese students speaking English, you will find them speaking like a book and consequently sounding quaint and offbeat.
Of course, the problem partly lies with the teachers, especially middle school teachers. For a large part, their level of English is not quite up there for them to know which word is formal and which informal, which way of expressing is more idiomatic and which less. The teachers need to continuously overhaul their English. They may have to do a course in English stylistics, which will certainly make them sit up and take notice regarding the register of words and language in their class instruction of English.
