Metonymy means a change of name, it's somewhat like metophor but commonly lies in the word, it stresses relation, but metophor stresses likeness. In metonymy, the thing spoken of and the thing meant maybe wholely unlike, but the relation between them is such that the mention of one thing sugggests another. common types are container for the thing contained, symbol for the thing symbolize, instrument for the agent, cause and effect.
