Arriving first because she was closer, she scoops Marie into her
arms. Now Marie, safe in the arms of a woman, screams and sobs, her
body fiercely contracting and releasing. Bert continues to make sounds
and tries to touch Marie with his face. Lila, another mover, wraps her
arms and legs around Joanna and Marie, creating a barrier between
them and Bert. Ingrid, also a mover, tries to directly engage Bert in battle.
He tolerates this interruption only briefly and goes back to Marie,
but with reduced ferocity. Now Lila tentatively strokes his hair and as
he quiets,he gently touches Marie who is no longer crying, but still
safely held by Joanna.
