My chemistry teacher once gave us a very
fascinating and dramatic account of her
life. I've always been inspired by her story, from which I've learned that life is about choices
and the decisions we make.
At age 18, she stroke out on her own. Like
many young people, she traveled to many
parts of the world to explore different cultures and lives. She also experimented with different kinds of jobs
meanwhile to see what she wanted to do for her future
career. During her traveling, she also found romance.
To settle down with her Spanish boyfriend, she moved to Spain and ended up living there for 8 long years.
What was more amazing was that by chance she
got into fashion business in Spain and became
a very good fashion designer. She even opened her own
business, which was very profitable. She made a comfortable living there. She had a house by the beach and a successful career, although she had split with the boyfriend by then. For most people, the story would probably end there. However, one day she suddenly realized that even though she seemed to
have it all, she did not have a formal education. She did not even graduate from high school. As soon as it struck her mind, she made a life-changing decision, moving back to her home country.
She left everything behind, her career and wealth.
Everyone thought she was crazy for making such a drastic
decision. But she had made up her mind.
After returning to her hometown, she started going
back to school again at almost 30. She first
got her high school diploma, then went to a community
college, later transferred to an ivy league university
and got her bachelor till eventually her PH.D.
Over the years, she went through lots of hardships to continue her education. After all, being a successful business woman was a huge contrast from being a poor student. At times she had doubts also whether she could make it. But she fought through the challenges like a nail, and finally here she was a chemistry instructor.
So what kind of life was she living as a teacher? She had a small house up on a hill. She married an English professor and had a teenage son. They had no TV in the house, she said, so they could spend some quality time together as a family. Did she regret her decision of coming back to her hometown? She just said she was glad to have proven to those who laughed at her wrong. Everything she had now was worthy of the sacrifices she had made.
