A wolf child is a human child completely brought up by wolves or other animals and lived isolated from human contact from a very young age.
Very few cases of wolf children have been reported.In 1920,two wolf girls were discovered in a forest in India,both of whom appeared to have been brought up from birth by wolves.They were taken to an orphanage and the struggle to "humanise the animals" began.They would not allow themselves to be dressed,scratched and bit people who tried to feed them,rejected cooked food and went on all fours.They did not speak.One of the girls died in 1921.Another girl,who was eight,survived until 1929,only in her latter years beginning to stand up,relate to other humans,and speak a few words.
We can see from the above case and other cases that a wolf child usually has no or little experience of human care,loving or social behavior,and,crucially,of human language.Children with some human experience before isolation are more easily rehabilitated.Children who learn an animal culture during the first five or six years of life,find it almost impossible to learn human language,even after intensive and loving care for years.
One of the reasons is that a wolf child is hardly growing up in a nurturing environment,and that the lack of language acquisition in later life may be due to the results of a generally abusive environment rather than being specifically due to a lack of exposure to language.
Another possible reason is that there may be a critical period for language acquisition,as some one argues.Critical periods are time frames during which environmental exposure is needed to stimulate an innate trait.Young chaffinches,for example,must hear the song of an adult chaffinch before reaching maturity,or else would never be able to sing.If a critical period for language acquisition does exist,and if no language is learned before the expiry of the critical period,it could never be learned in a normal and fully functional sense.
What’s more,when wolf children are discovered,they tend to become the subject of lively scientific and media interest.Once the excitement dies down and their limitations in terms of learning language and culture and social behaviour become obvious,frustration can set in and they often spend the rest of their lives being passed from one caregiver to another.
