(1)Money doesn’t grow on trees
“Money doesn’t grow on trees,” my grandfather used to say.“I know that,” I’d reply,“It comes from my dad’s wallet.” It didn’t take long for me to find out that wasn’t true either. And as I grew older,I saw my dad’s wallet less and less.
Most kids get money from their parents. Some kids have to ask their parents for money when they want to buy something. Some kids get a regular allowance. And most kids spend that money on themselves. They buy things to make them happy:sweets,DVDs,game cards and clothes. Before they know it,the money is gone and they’re asking their parents for more.
Some parents teach their kids how to handle money responsibly from an early age.The kids get an allowance but they can’t spend all the money on themselves. They must save a little (in the bank),spend a little (on treats) and give a little (to the poor).
Learning the value of money and how to handle it responsibly is one of the most important lessons kids can learn.
(2) Speaking up
Speaking up is an important skill to learn in school.I call it a “skill” because you must speak your mind with courage and discretion.
When I was younger,I was afraid of speaking up in class. But as I’ve gotten older,I’ve realized that speaking up isn’t such a bad thing. In fact,I can learn more from it than from any other form of studying.
In schools in the US (and perhaps even in China),there is an unspoken rule:when you see something wrong, don’t speak up.If you do,you’re a “snitch”.This has saved many bullies from getting punished. So I’m here to tell you to have courage in these situations. When something wrong happens, tell a teacher or a parent or anyone; and if you feel scared about the results of your actions, tell someone about that, too.
On the other hand, when you see something “bad”,for example, someone drops a piece of trash, speak up with discretion. In these cases,no one will get hurt if you keep the truth to yourself and pick up the trash. But when it’s time for you to speak your mind, don’t be afraid to do it!
