题目详情
It's usual for the coins we carry around in our pockets to have the head of a famous person on them.It is usually the head of a leader or a renowned (有名望的) figure from the country's past.
The UK's royal mint (皇家造币厂),however, has just done something unusual:It has released a limited number of coins featuring a rabbit. Not a real-life animal, but a storybook rabbit.Peter Rabbit, the beloved character invented by British illustrator (插图画家) Beatrix Potter (1866-1943),can now be seen on the shiny brand new British 50pence coin.
Peter Rabbit, for those who don't know, first became known to the public in 1902.Potter published The Tale of Peter Rabbit in that year after inventing her charming bunny years before to comfort a sick child.Peter Rabbit is young and naughty. He's famous for stealing vegetables. In the tale he ignores his mother's orders and sneaks (偷溜) into Mr McGregor's garden, eating as many of Mr McGregor's carrots as he can.Peter appears in other books by Potter too.He always gets into scrapes (困境),whether on his own or with others. But he never learns!
The image of Peter is as famous as his stories.Like other characters from Potter's books,he's a very human-looking animal. He wears a blue jacket with golden buttons (纽扣) just like a young boy.The closeness of Peter to real children is,of course, why his books have been so successful. The Peter Rabbit series has sold more than 150million copies in 35languages.
The new Peter Rabbit 50pence coin will mainly be available in the Lake District,a very beautiful region of lakes and mountains in the Northwest of England. Many tourists visit this part of Britain just because of the Beatrix Potter connection. Her best-known creation,Peter Rabbit, has come a long way since he first appeared as a playful,always-hungry young rabbit in 1902!
