　　小说的主线,叙述的是一个氏族部落的领袖辉煌又仓皇,最后近乎是殉葬的一生,他的命运走向正是整个氏族,乃至整个非洲部落文明的历史走向,那就是被殖民者的武力以及他们带来的文化暴力侵蚀吞噬,逐步瓦解,消失不见.小说中没有直接触及入侵与反抗这种政治或是军事问题,而是把宗教信仰放在了矛盾对撞的中心地带,并且用的语言也是平和的沉静的,而非暴风骤雨顿挫激进.我想,这和作者本人对于暴力反抗方式的取舍有关,也符合古老氏族代代相传的生存信念……那些最朴实浅显的道理,却有着最震撼人心的力量,蕴藏着最精辟的人生智慧!“鸟儿为什么不息而飞,因为猎人们射而必中”；“我永远不会身在河边,却还用唾沫洗手”；“我们觉得他们愚蠢,只是我们还不了解,他们只是不属于这里,来错了地方”；“谚语让我们说的话更利于消化”；“男人在得意的时候是属于他的父亲的氏族的,当他落寞消沉时却只能在母亲的庇护下哭泣”……诸如此类,不胜枚举.
　　有形的暴力可以防备,思想信念的入侵则销骨于无声.这种无形的暴力更危险更可怕.我不认为历史潮流的洗刷有错,去伪存真,滤去糟粕也是社会发展的必然.可是,多站在人文关怀的角度考虑,这些以自己的意志去刻意改变他人生活模式,更替其价值观的做法,难道不是一种更残忍更强大的暴力吗?殖民者们扮演的正是这一部分人类的角色.
　　主人公是崇尚力量的,他有自己一套男人的坚守,从不惧怕敌人也不屈从于妖魔神灵,他唯一害怕的就是恐惧和软弱,最瞧不起是懒惰,即使心里也会有欢喜伤悲,但绝对不会在脸上泄露半点神色……感叹于作者的描述,简短却极富画面感,阅读的时候仿佛字不是映入眼帘,而是大珠小珠落玉盘似的敲击内心.
