"HIV/AIDS has come knocking on everyone's door " says 17-year-old Yetarik a member of the Anti-AIDS Association " Tabor Wegagan" in Awassa south central Ethiopia. But when Yetarik and other members of the association try to provide information about HIV infection they still face hostility (敌意) from some people. "They blame us for having HIV and for its spread " Yetarik says. "Every time 1 am faced with this attitude I know that we have to work even harder."

Tabor Wegagan was founded six years ago by a group of young people who wanted to tell other children about the disease destroying their country.   They began by practising what they lecture. "All 20 of us decided to have ourselves tested for HIV to prove our own condition and to be an example for other youth to follow " says Yetarik.

Then with help from a local nongovernmental organization the association trained "peer educators" to spread the word about HIV among young people. Each of these peer educators is responsible for gathering a group of five to ten adolescents and sharing information about HIV twice a week for a period of two months.

The association also creates and performs plays on subjects related to HIV/ AIDS such as the discrimination (歧视) HIV-positive people face in Ethiopia. And it runs a football team and a small circus which both present more opportunities to spread awareness about the epidemic and fight against stigma        (耻辱) .

"Our goal is not only to equip young people with the knowledge and skills that are needed to survive this epidemic but also to foster a more tolerant and caring community that does not simply abandon unfortunate victims out of ignorance and fear " says Yetarik. "We want a society that finds the heart and sympathy to take care of them and ease their suffering as much as possible."
