it 指life,答案D相当于it was before,但这里没有before,用了used to be,已经表示过去,所以结尾不用was,用了(used to )be.
看一下例子吧：
Life is much easier now than it was before.
Life is much easier (in the twenty一first century) than it was (before).
=Life is much easier (in the twenty一first century) than it used to be.
=Life （in the twenty一first century）is much easier than it used to be.
