或问复仇,对曰：非治世之道也.明天子在上,自方伯、诸侯以至于有司,各修其职,其能杀不辜者少矣.不幸而有焉,则其子弟以告于有司,有司不能听,以告于其君；其君不能听,以告于方伯；方伯不能听,以告于天子,则天子诛其不能听者,而为之施刑于其仇.乱世,则天子、诸侯、方伯皆不可以告.故《书》说纣曰：“凡有辜罪,乃罔恒获.小民方兴,相为敌仇.”盖仇之所以兴,以上之不可告,辜罪之不常获也.方是时,有父兄之仇而辄杀之者,君子权其势,恕其情,而与之可也.故复仇之义,见于《春秋传》,见于《礼记》,为乱世之为子弟者言之也.        《春秋传》以为父受诛,子复仇,不可也.此言不敢以身之私,而害天下之公.又以为父不受诛,子复仇,可也.此言不以有可绝之义,废不可绝之恩也.    《周官》之说曰：“凡复仇者,书于士,杀者无罪.”疑此非周公之法也.凡所以有复仇者,以天下之乱,而士之不能听也.有士矣,不能听其杀人之罪以施行,而使为人之子弟者仇之,然则何取于士而禄之也?古之于杀人,其听之可谓尽矣,犹惧其未也,曰：“与其杀不辜,宁失不经.”今书于士,则杀之无罪,则所谓复仇者,果所谓可仇者乎?庸讵知其不独有可言者乎?就当听其罪矣,则不杀于士师,而使仇者杀之,何也?故疑此非周公之法也.    或曰：世乱而有复仇之禁,则宁杀身以复仇乎?将无复仇而以存人之祀乎?曰：可以复仇而不复,非孝也；复仇而殄祀,亦非孝也.以仇未复之耻,居之终身焉,盖可也.仇之不复者,天也；不忘复仇者己也.克己以畏天,心不忘其亲,不亦可矣.
