[1] When a group of mums refused to let me and my baby daughter join the circle at a nursery singing class on my first trip out as a stay-at-home dad I sobbed for the first time in my adult life. That wasn’t the only time I burst into tears during the five months I looked after Lily. Out of loneliness. Out of exhaustion. Out of frustration. I am one sad stay-at-home dad.
[2] “But isn’t this what you wanted?” says my wife Mel. After all I’d forced her back into her job when her maternity leave (产假) ran out. Mel earned more than me and it made financial sense for her to . “I’ll do it ” I declared confident for a new challenge.
[3] I have to admit that I’ve failed on all counts. I’m worried I’ve done lasting damage to our daughter. During the time I’m in charge she hasn’t learned a single new word. Not only have I damaged my daughter’s speech development I’ve made her overweight. Lily has become much heavier than children of her age. Then there’s the impact I’ve had on her personality. As opposed to the “girly” games Lily and I wrestle build Lego and chase each other. As a result Lily has grown into a risk-taker. Having seen other babies don’t play with her I’m afraid she’ll become friendless.
[4] Experts suggest 14 months old is an extremely important stage when learning builds up and behaviors are set for life. If we put Lily in a nursery now she could catch up without any lasting damage. If I carry on looking after her she’ll become worse in her life. Mel agrees I should hand Lily over to the nursery professionals while I look for a new job.
